“Love is not love/Which alters when it alteration finds”, wrote William Shakespeare in the famous Sonnet 116, suggesting here that love is a constant emotion unaffected by change. But what was the concept of “love” at the end of the sixteenth century? Given in English, the lectures show how ideas of love and sexuality manifest themselves in Shakespeare’s poetry, in the sonnets and in some of the plays. The series will be followed by two study circles around the material from the lectures.
